Jim Baker - Photography
In the Mind's Eye - L'Anse, Michigan
Jim & Ruth Baker both love photography.  Ruth also draws and paints, but Jim jokingly says that he couldn’t even draw a straight line with a ruler, so he is a button pusher. Jim bought his first camera when he was 10 years old for $3 and 2 Campbell Pork and Beans labels.  That simple Hawkeye camera led to a lifelong love of photography.  While mostly self taught, he did take some advanced photography courses while living in Lansing in the mid seventies.

First a Soldier and then a Respiratory Therapist, Jim’s passion for photography finally led him and Ruth to open “In The Mind’s Eye” Photography & Art Supplies in L’Anse, Michigan over twenty years ago.  Jim not only takes pictures but has always done his own printing of his images, black & white and color.  Today Jim is exploring the exciting world of digital photography and again he is working from the beginning to the end.  Taking the picture, enhancing and manipulating it in the computer and finally producing fine Giclee prints form some of the sample images seen here.

Jim and his wife Ruth have lived in L’Anse and the U.P. for over thirty years now, where they continue their business today. More images can be seen at both the U.P. Made Artist Market and the gallery at their store in L’Anse.

Ronald Corey - Watercolor, Oils & Pencil
Nancy Corey - Antiques
"My family and I have lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for over 35 years. I was a teacher for over 11 years and worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections for over 25 years.  I have now returned to my art work. My return has been extremely challenging, yet exhilarating and rewarding. It is more like a new beginning. Currently, I try to find subject matter that excites or stimulates me and then determine which medium would best suit my visual concept. To date I have worked mainly in water color and oil but am constantly re-familiarizing myself with various mediums. I also enjoy photography and drawing with conte crayon and pencil. My art has not taken a specific direction yet but I am looking forward to a productive future. My goal is to continue entering juried shows and produce a quality product.

To date I have entered and been accepted in three juried shows:  1.) The 2007 Artist of the UP, at Marquette's DeVos Museum.  2.) The 2006 Northern Exposure XIII at the William Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba.  At this exhibit I was awarded special recognition and an article featuring my work appears in the May/June 2007 UP Magazine.  3.)The other show was Our Town 2006 sponsored by Daimler Chrysler held in Birmingham/Bloomfield Hills."  Ron's work is available for viewing and purchase at the UP Made Artist Market or visit his website at www.racoreysfineart.com for more information!

Karen Lenhart
Karen Lenhart is an award-winning artist who lives with her husband Phillip on Cisco Lake just west of Watersmeet, Michigan, in the Ottawa National Forest.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in art education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She is a member of the Headwaters Art League in Land O'Lakes, an associate member of Lakeland Art League in Woodruff and a member of the Wisconsin Regional Artist Association (WRAA).  Karen is also an associate member of the National Watercolor Society.  Her painting career has spanned 23 years.

Artist's Statement:  I love working with watercolors for the spontaneous quality of the medium.  Things happen between water, pigment and paper that I don't always plan for - resulting in voluntary surprises.  I find this quality to be very exciting, giving a sense of adventure to my painting experience.  This is what drew me to the medium and what keeps watercolor as my favorite form of artistic expression.

My subjects are drawn from the natural environment around me.  As a keen observer of nature and an avid gardener, I am constantly surrounded by subject matter that proves to be a wealth of inspiration.  I paint both from memory and from photographs.  The photos simply serve to initiate my creative process.  Once I begin planning for a painting, rather than striving for an exact likeness, I find it is the "spirit" of the subject or scene that enhances my imagination.

Sandy Long

Being a pastor's wife and raising 2 children kept Sandy Long very busy for many years. After her children went off to college and careers, she began doing oil and acrylic painting. She began painting on rocks and then moved on to real canvas.

Sandy lives in Fremont, MI with her husband Don. Three years ago they bought a home in Watton in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, spending as much time there as they can in the summer and fall.  Sandy travels all over Michigan, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming with her husband as he represents a Christian home for people with developmental disabilities. The beauty of the West as well as the UP have influenced her work.  Sandy says that she really enjoys being out in God's creation and seeing His handiwork. It is only natural for her to make this the subject of her artwork.

Nancy Lymangrover
Up Above Silk Painting

Nancy Lymangrover lives wtith her husband in Manistique where they have a cottage on Lake Michigan. They are retired educators from the Brighton, Ann Arbor area where Nancy taught first graders for more than 20 yrs.  They now spend as much of the year as they can in the UP.  Winter sends them to Ann Arbor, only because they would have a mile and half to plow to their house in the winter.

About 4 yrs ago Nancy discovered silk painting when she bought a silk hanging at the Hiawatha Music Festival.  She spent the next couple of years teaching herself the art of silk painting. She now uses several methods to paint scarves, wall hangings and suncatchers.  Scarves are painted using the Serti Method of tying, folding, pleating, and scrunching the silk, and then applying silk dye.  For items that have a design, a glue-like resist is applied to the lines of the design which resist and separate the dyes.  They are then painted using silk dyes, blending the colors as in a watercolor painting.  Each handpainted scarf or hanging takes several steps and hours from design to setting the colors.  Nancy is best known for her Trillium wall hangings.  The name "Up Above Silk Painting" came from Nancy's husband saying he wanted to be "up above" rather than "down below" the Mackinac Bridge.  You can reach Nancy at
www.bothlymans@hotmail.com or 906-341-3890.

Terry Mills
Terry has been drawing since he was a child, when he and his twin brother would sit at the kitchen table and draw for hours. He draws his inspiration from the beautiful landscapes and scenery of the Keweenaw Peninsula and Lake Superior, and the history and variety of historical buildings in his hometown of Calumet, Michigan.

Terry is self-taught, and credits perfecting his technique of wet oil painting to internationally known artist Bob Ross, along with Dorothy Dent and Brenda Harris. He uses mostly water soluble oils on stretched triple primed canvas. Terry will have a variety of paintings on display at the market. He can be reached at tsmills@sbcglobal.net for more information.

Karen Milszeski
Karen Milszezki is a self-taught artist and has has been painting for six years. She was born and raised in Minnesota. She is married and has two grown children. She, together with her husband, moved here to the U.P. from Duluth, Minnesota four years ago. They live in the town of Sidnaw, Michigan, which she loves. "The peace and beauty of the area feeds my soul."

For Karen, painting is an act of prayer and meditation. "I approach the canvas with no idea or plan for the outcome. I let my heart guide my brush. There is always a moment when heart and mind meet and everything on the canvas starts coming together. That moment is always filled with incredible energy. That is the moment when I feel closest to the Creator."

Sue Spelich

Tim Spelich

Sue grew up in Dollar Bay, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Any aspect of the artistic world has been a fascination to her during her entire life. She has taken painting lessons in the past for several years, taken an art appreciation class at the local Community Art Center, and a photography class at Finlandia University. She has also had several showings of her work at local galleries. Sue has also painted a violin for a silent auction sponsored by the Suzuki Association, at the Rozsa Center of Michigan Technological University. Today, Sue resides in Hancock, Michigan.
"I love to keep finding ways to portray the beauty and magic of nature and people. I use the medium that best captures my thoughts and feelings, or the situation at that particular moment. Many of my paintings have an ethereal quality to them, and I hope that as one looks at a picture that I paint or photograph, that they may feel as if they would like to be a part of it."

Sue and her husband Tim have also collected vintage and antique items for several years, and have a selection of pottery, glassware, linens, and decorative items for sale at the Market.

Denise Villeneuve

"Discouraged by the limitations of a fixed focus lens, I bought my first SLR in 1985. It was a Nikon FG with a 35-70mm lens. I was in creative heaven! But, unfortunately life was too busy then to really learn much.  The last few years I've been taking photography classes and advancing my equipment. Today I use a Nikon F100 and Nikon D200 and D70 for taking my photographs. I have also acquired a variety of lenses as well.  Since I recently retired, I decided you are never too old to learn and enrolled in classes at Northern Michigan University, School of Art and Design with a photography major. To be honest, I am enjoying using many other mediums of artistic expression, including graphic design with the computer! I have so much to look forward to each semester!  I'm currently experimenting a little in infra red photography, digitally, and light painting. There is just so much to learn! Having a camera in hand leads to discovery - new ways to view the world, and rediscovery of things forgotten."

My interest in photography is the world I live in. Out in the country with horses. Nature has so many photographic opportunities! My horses also give me opportunities to capture their beauty and sometimes quirky behaviours. I have a passion for the country and with it shrinking, I want to capture what I can before much of it is gone. I have also been taking photographs of some equine events, and have been enjoying it as well.
